Arctic Monkey Credit R&B Star Ashanti By New Song

Inspiration for the new Arctic Monkey’s song R U Mine is R&B singer Ashanti.

It seems like they were influenced by her R&B singles of their youth while they were making the songs for their new album AM. Their frontman Alex Turner actually revealed that the new song was based on an Ashanti song.

He told British Esquire, “R U Mine? was kind of a lift from an Ashanti tune. We like the scales and the melodies on some of those records. The way the backing vocals might come right to the front and disappear again… There was a crossroads at one point where it was, like, ‘Are we going to go for this thing or not?’ And thankfully we decided to take the red pill (make that choice).”

Ashanti states Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Tupac Shakur, Mary J. Blige, Ella Fitzgerald, Smokey Robinson, Donna Summer and Blue Magic as her musical influences.

Praised as a gifted songwriter by her peers and critics, Ashanti has written and co-written most of her music. She is currently working on her own publishing company titled Written Entertainment.

The R&B star released her fifth studio album titled BraveHeart, on March 4th, 2014.

She also performed the charity tune “Just Stand Up” alongside 15 other female singers for the Stand Up to Cancer live television special which helped raise $100 million for research on cancer.
